ABOUT IAANUC INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF AREWA NURSES USA AND CANADA
International Association of Arewa Nurses is a non-governmental, nonprofit organization (NGO) registered in Texas in the United States of America. Our vision and mission are to unite Arewa Nurses together to address specific health problems facing the people of northern Nigeria and the challenges affecting nurses in northern Nigerian communities which by and large are more underdeveloped and are in need of immediate serious attention. It is our commitment to empower and promote nursing excellence amongst our nurses in Nigeria, United States, and Canada.
Goals and Objectives
Our goals and objectives are to focus on specific health issues that are more prevalent in northern Nigeria. Some specific areas of our focus are:
a) Maternal and infant mortality. Records show that the rate of maternal and infant mortality is far higher in northern Nigeria compared to Southern Nigeria. There are much higher poverty and poor education of the average mother in northern Nigeria compared to the south.
b) Addressing communicable and non-communicable infections: As was the case in medieval Europe, many in northern Nigeria might think communicable diseases and infections are predestined by God, but science and nursing practice show that the processes that lead to such infections can be controlled based on effective scientific methods, which we can help provide.
c) Adolescent/Teenage (Drug Addiction Education): This is a major concern in the northern region of Nigeria. It is destroying the future leaders and human resources of the region given that once their lives are destroyed at this stage, it will affect their adulthood. Furthermore, we are quite aware that drug addiction reflects a deeper social problem in the society as drugs are used as a coping mechanism.
d) The vulnerable (displaced, low income, and the elderly population): There are certain groups of people in the north that have been displaced and many of such people are from low-income backgrounds and the elderly. We are determined that from time to time, we would like to conduct outreaches to provide palliatives in the form of food, etc. to such people, which is similar to what we did in some states. We will be focusing on health promotion and prevention through education and distribution of palliatives that will help to alleviate hardship.
e) Increasing and improving the institutional capacity for the training of nurses: We intend to play some role in examining and evaluating the ways and manner that nursing schools recruit and train their students as part of an effective national healthcare strategy for providing affordable and inclusive healthcare services to all citizens with discrimination on the basis of religion, ethnicity, gender, or income. One of our long-term goals is to have a scholarship fund to assist in the area of nursing education.
f) Collaboration with other organizations that have a similar mission: We intend, as we pursue our goals and objectives, to collaborate and work together with any organization in Nigeria, the United States, and Canada that is committed to the goals and mission similar to our own irrespective of whether such organization is in another region of the country and whether the members of such organizations are from northern Nigeria or other regions of the country and the United States and Canada.
On a critical note, we know we cannot take on the problems of the whole world, but we have chosen these specific issues of concern knowing fully that the northern Nigerian population is large and truly diverse. We envision that if we are able to build a strong membership population, get the nurses in the region highly motivated, and have leaders who are knowledgeable, professionally qualified, along with stakeholders that share the same vision as leaders, we will be able to meet our goals and objectives. We will be engaging all cadres of nurses in professional nursing practice in the north and other regions in so far as they identify with our vision.
Discrimination: International Association of Arewa Nurses does not discriminate on the basis of race, age, color, sex, national origin, physical or mental disability, religion, military status, or otherwise as may be prohibited by federal and state law.
